We asked the specialists at Ursus to explain the technical characteristics that make Diablo the perfect wheels for XC and Marathon races .
What features of Ursus Diablo wheels do professional athletes appreciate most?
The features that our riders appreciate most about the Diablo are its lightness and responsiveness/smoothness.
The hookless rims of these carbon wheels have a UD finish. The weight is just over 1,328 kg for the 25mm-wide MTB wheelset and 1,390 kg for the 30mm-wide version.
They are fast and easy to handle wheels, with an extremely sporty set-up.
How did you arrive at the design of these flagship MTB wheels of the Ursus range?
We sought to create the simplest possible design to minimize the weight of the rim. Diablo wheels, like all Ursus wheels, are designed, manufactured, prototyped, tested, and brought to market by our in-house engineering team. We are always seeking the most innovative technologies, designs , and lightweight materials . Another strength is that we constantly listen to the feedback of our teams and Ambassadors.
Before releasing a wheel onto the market, we test it both in the lab and on the track, to continually make further improvements.
What are the benefits of hookless rims for the athlete, and how do they help reduce the weight of bike wheels?
Hookless rims are straight-sided rims, without a retention hook, and are only used with tubeless tires.
From the competing athlete's point of view, the advantages are as follows:
- the wheels are lighter;
- they make it possible to use a wider internal channel, with a non-significant increase in weight;
- They improve aerodynamics between the rim and tubeless tire, reducing turbulence.
So this kind of design makes MTB wheels lighter, faster and smoother.
Ursus Diablo MTB wheels are available in two versions: 25" and 30". What's the difference?
A wider rim provides greater stability to the tire housing, ensuring less movement when cornering. This allows for larger tires and lower pressures, thus ensuring greater comfort for the rider. On the other hand, a 25 mm internal rim is lighter.
The choice is up to the athlete or team. Some teams, like Olympia Factory Team or Bottecchia, prefer the 30mm internal channel, while Team Soudal Lee Cougan, for example, has chosen Diablos with a 25mm internal channel this season.
