Triathlon Bike Wheels: Medium or High Profile Carbon Wheels from Ursus

Which Ursus wheels do we recommend for the most demanding triathletes? What features make these products the ideal technical choice for your triathlon bike? Let's find out together in the following lines.

Triathlon bike wheels, an introduction.

We've seen in our article that there are different types of needs a triathlete can experience during their activity. For example, you might be planning to participate in long-distance races or medium-short distance races. Depending on this, you might make diametrically opposed technical choices when it comes to the wheels you buy for your triathlon bike.

Triathlon wheels for long distances and Ironman

If you dream of an Ironman (or if you're fascinated by the idea of challenging yourself in a very long-distance triathlon), you probably imagine competing on the cycling section on a bike with a very aerodynamic design . The idea is to minimize air resistance and, consequently, the energy loss needed to perform: in these cases, when choosing wheels, athletes tend to opt for carbon rims with a very high profile (from 60 to 90 cm). As we've seen, this approach offers clear advantages in terms of aerodynamics, but it can also create some problems that are important to be aware of. In strong gusts of crosswind, the height of the carbon profile is less effective , worsening the bike's handling. To overcome this problem, we developed our aero wheels based on the GOE 775 Airfoil profile, the same one used to design airplanes.
The results of the Ursus engineering team's design efforts can be particularly appreciated in the Miura TC67 , which, despite its 67 mm high profile , is truly stable in all conditions. The main advantage of all this is the reduced stress on the arm and back muscles : an energy saving that can be significant for the final stretch of the race.

The hubs are a major innovation. In fact, the R40 model has a unique design and works with a straight-head spoke connection, an advantage for tensioning and rim sealing. The perfect alignment of the spokes/holes/nipples proves to be an absolute advantage in terms of reliability . Machined with the precision of numerically controlled machines, these hubs ensure unparalleled smoothness, complemented by SKF bearings.
The other great advantage that the Miura TC67 can offer is the possibility of mounting different types of tires on this type of rim: you can choose between the convenience of using a clincher and the extreme rolling performance of tubeless . You can also use tires from 25mm up to 42mm.

Triathlon wheels for medium distances and sprints

For medium distances (for example, in the case of the Olympic sprint triathlon), unlike in the Ironman, it is allowed to take advantage of the opponent's slipstream. In this case, the need to "cut through the air" gives way to the need to ride a very maneuverable bike , less aerodynamic and more endurance-oriented . The setup of these bikes includes a pair of carbon wheels with medium-height profiles (from 30 to 50 cm) capable of giving their best in any racing conditions, a description that perfectly fits our Miura TS47 evo .

A product with unparalleled performance, already a strong point of several teams around the world, the Miura TS37 evo wheels unleash all your power on the asphalt. This is thanks to the incredibly smooth R40 aluminum hubs, as well as the lightweight tubular carbon rims (just 550 g for the front wheel and 700 g for the rear wheel).

Conclusion.

Triathlon bike wheels: Miura TS47 or TC67? There's no one-size-fits-all answer, so we've tried to explain the main differences between a product designed to give you an advantage on sprint courses and another designed to improve aerodynamic performance, useful for longer sessions. The choice therefore depends on the type of triathlete you want to become , but in any case, it will be a quality choice without compromise.
