Wheels that can take on the Northern Classics: Ursus Miura TR37 e TR67 Disc
Al lavoro in bici? L’ambiente ringrazia, ma anche le tue tasche. Senza dimenticare la salute.

What characteristics does a pair of wheels need to perform at its best on the world’s most famous tracks? Find out now by reading this article.

We were curious to test our 28 mm internal diameter rims in the most extreme conditions, so, while we’re in pre-season, we decided to cycle for a few hundred kilometers on the world’s most famous track with a few professional cyclists. The test results clearly show that the Miura TR series (in its disc brake version) is the most performing product line in this type of track.

Why have the pros crowned the Miura TR37 disc and Miura TR67 disc as the most performing solutions for the Northern Classics?

Thanks to the simulations done on the road, we were able to verify how the choice of a rim with a 28 mm internal diameter can guarantee (in certain situations) a series of technical advantages compared to the classic 24 mm rim. This solution allows for mounting of 28 mm or 30 mm tubulars, helping cyclists a lot, especially on very dirty or wet routes and for very long distances. Let's see why:

  • Increased safety when riding. In very particular races such as the Paris - Roubaix, Flanders or the Strade Bianche you can easily come across rough, mud-covered roads. By choosing oversize tubulars, riders intend to increase the tread surface which is in direct contact with the asphalt. During our tests in the Flanders, riders experienced improved stability with the Miura TR series wheels. In addition to this, we must remind everyone that for bikes with disc brakes it is always best to opt for a wider wheel profile: the powerful braking typical of the disc is balanced on the ground by tires with a wider surface. We can therefore say with certainty that these rims contribute to improving riding safety.
  • Increased comfort in long-distance races. The use of wide tubulars on 28 mm wheels allows them to be inflated at a lower pressure than what is commonly used on asphalt and dry paths. This is a technical solution borrowed from cyclocross, a specialty in which runners compete on rough trails with extremely rigid, non-cushioned bikes, similar to racing bikes. With less inflation, the tires manage to absorb the roughness of difficult terrain types, while at the same time improving the comfort of cyclists by allowing them – to the best of their ability – to race across the 250 km of the Paris - Roubaix.
  • Increased stability in curves. Compared to a 24 mm rim, the Miura TR37 disc and TR67 disc wheels with 28 mm or 30 mm tires offer remarkable grip thanks to the greater tread surface touching the ground.

Paris - Roubaix: is it better to use the Miura TR37 Disc or the Miura TR67 Disc?

As we have seen, the 28 mm wide profile is the main feature sought after by professionals to face the Northern Classics. That's why in our tests we asked the cyclists to perform several aerodynamic setup tests, from which we have determined that, for this type of race, a 37 mm profile height is preferred to the more extreme 67 mm. The route is very hard, and for this reason reduced weight was considered a priority compared to aerodynamics. The most chosen wheel at the end of the test was the Miura TR37 Disc.

What do pros think of tubeless?

We also asked the pros to evaluate the alternative solution, a rubberized tubeless wheel with an internal diameter of 28 mm. The Ursus product we’re talking about is the Miura TC37 Disc, which has been rather successful on the road. Of course, the weight of tubeless tires is slightly higher than tubulars; however, some cyclists have selected this pair of wheels as their favorite for the Roubaix. In fact, tubeless tires increase the reliability of the bike on long-distance routes and provides improved comfort. Ultimately, the choice between tubular and tubeless was found to be very personal. Conclusion

Wheels that can stand the test of the Northern Classics: Ursus Miura TR37 e TR67 disc. From the tests carried out alongside professionals, we were able to understand how different models of wheels behave in particular conditions such as those typically found in the Flanders. While some racers have chosen to mount wheels with 28mm internal diameter for tubeless tires in order to reduce the risk of punctures, others have opted for the Miura TR37 Disc. This 28-mm in diameter Ursus solution for tubular tires has certainly proven to be the best performing and is therefore ideal for those who are aiming for the final victory.
